Narrator:
“Deep in the farthest reaches of a distant galaxy on a timeline fractured from our own
The intrepid Captain of the starship Cygnus-1 navigates space-time
In search of a frequency that exists beneath the threshold of human perception
Will he be able to locate this frequency?
Or will he travel endlessly in search of something that cannot be found?
Can you hear The Signal Heard Throughout Space?”

The Signal
06:00
|
|||
The Captain:
In a flash it came simultaneously
A signal distant, discordant—at a high frequency
Searching for something beyond the defined
Nebulous, abstract, and sealed by mysterious forces radiating from Ultima Thule
Eyes erupt in a nuclear gleam—wrenched from the torment of that dream
Clouding fog, hazy scenes
Transmission stopped by the gleam!
Haunted by that dream, or scenes from memories?
The beacon of a relay league or warnings in open seas?
Fly dauntless starship, Cygnus-1!
Shift into hyperdrive—commence countdown, Cygnus-1!
Faster than light racing through the stars
Ignition engaged; we have lift-off—we’ll reach the outer limits!
Soft, the Signal’s lost. Drift into the unknown—frozen in cryo
On and on we go, waiting in the cold
On and on we go, I’ll wait for a signal to be loud and clear
Is that a signal I hear? Make it loud—make it clear!
Beaten down to the stone. They’ve atomized and carbonized every last bone
As I wake from the cold, years passing me instantaneously
Time spent in a cold deep sleep has me stumbling further from signals heard distantly
What's left of me? Something I'm still seeking to be
A signal is all that I need…

Suspended Animation
02:19
|
|||
The Captain:
As I lay cold and frozen in suspended animation
Dreaming of what I’d find—I’m alone and I hate it here
Fear of the gleaming light that is blinding
Through the storm and sea—I’m hoping that I still believe
Even though the flame will burn we’re shaking
In the dancing light the shadows shaping my fear
Fear of the gleaming light—I couldn’t shake it
I will always feel that I can’t make it on my own

Spaceflight Dementia
05:22
|
|||
The Captain:
Drifting along through a starless vacancy
Confined within these iron walls—a vile technology
All the whispers that would rend the quiet sleep
Confined within these iron walls—a den of secrecy
My fears aligning. It hurts me so—I will not go blindly
A wild, roaming, misled route. Corrosive specter of doubt
On writhing, intertwining pathways in pursuit of sounds that exist beyond perceived reality
Extrasensory receptors activating to anticipate the faintest and the fleeting vibrations
Pulses of energy!
Is that the Signal that I’ve been seeking?
It’s just cosmic background radiation from the Epoch of Recombination
Interspersed through constellations
Receptors at maximum capacity. Limitation reached—so close to what I need
But it’s overloading now…
Dead set on reaching what I’ve always sought
Betting all on this—betting all that I have lost
Spaceflight dementia creeps into the mind
Delirium, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
Undulating lines—the colors now collide
A ripple bleeding from the ceiling in undulating lines
Kaleidoscopic, mezmeroptic, hallucinogenic trines!
Breaths, short and fast. Oxygen consumed at last
Light, it came to me—a gleam in my eye…
|
||||
5. |
||||
The Captain:
Breathing shallowly—oxygen stores now depleting
Cygnus-1 took quite a beating
Harm sustained from overheating burned away what was remaining
What now remains?
Combusting with every breath what meager molecules are left
A beacon beaming, pioneering carving through the atmosphere
Small, but infinite incandescent light
Dim, yet in full sight. Piercing endless night
Oh, it’s burning bright!
Forging on and on tenaciously fixated on the slightest sign of a reprieve
Looming is Ganymede
What lies beneath?
Crystal clear, but devoid of life. Reservoirs of bile and blight
A beacon gleaming in the deep
Shimmering from beneath the Acid Lakes of Ganymede!
Blown wide—depressurized—all air bleeding out into the void
Meteorite—falling of stars—carbonized—prepared to die
But holding tight to every atom left of life!
Brace for impact in the acid lake!
As I lay, free of motion in suspended animation
Dreaming of what I’d find—I am sure that it was not here
Fear of the gleaming light—I couldn’t shake it
I will always feel that I can’t make it on my own
Eyes erupt to view the gleam. Visions of what was foreseen
Reaching out to grasp the dream. Sublimate straight into steam
What light gleams beneath the Acid Lakes of Ganymede?
Dissipation of my extent, outer being.
Nuclear fission of atoms that would connect the seams
Narrator:
“As his body broke down into its most basic molecules it would spell disaster!
What was the origin of this mysterious light and what will become of our hero!?”
Ripped apart at the seams. Retinas burned by the nuclear gleam
The Formulator:
“I’ll redefine the pain you hold inside.
I’ll redefine—just have to sign the dotted line. I’ll formulate a new divide.
Chase the signal to continue—rebuild all the atoms left of you!”
The Captain:
My form now discreet—a sum less than the whole being.
My form is incomplete
(sum of him, all of him, some of him, none of him)
Mend the fracture that exists inside of me, so please reformulate
Don’t let this mission be my final fate
The end has never seemed so near, but wait—don’t you see a glint of hope inside the gleam?
So, please, reformulate…
Don’t say it’s too late!
Now it’s coming back to me. A new reality is waiting there for me
Don’t say it’s too late…

The Human Molecule
07:10
|
|||
The Captain:
Redeemer, or deceiver? Boy, I’ve got a lot of data from the Formulator
Should I try my faith, or deny?
Will I believe?
Found, the Signal’s loud! Another chance to seek—primed for the next round
Born and reformed, transformation of my distorted and alternate contour
What’s in the tendons—in the sinew?
What forms the basis of the Human Molecule?
I’ll deny his simple request to lead him to the end for which I strive
He granted me life, but at what price?
(A wild, roaming, misled route intertwining pathways in pursuit of sounds)
I’ll define a new path forward—I won’t lead him to my new world!
The Formulator:
“I built you piece by piece from the nothing that you were
You will lead me, obediently, to the Signal that you heard!
Breathe in and feel it does not burn—when will you learn?
I should have left you drowning in the murk. You should have died alone!”
The Captain:
Another form. Another face. Another time. Another space
The line is straight. A new world—a home that’s safe
The Formulator:
“Now I’m infected by the sound, won’t you come around?
Aid me. Assuage me. Let’s find what you’re chasing
Betray me? You’ll have hell to pay!
As I can create, so too can I destroy
The forces in my employ will seek you out without a choice
What’s that? Can you hear it? The vibrations of space must sustain it!
A distant rumbling swelling to a crescendo…
And then it came to me—in a flash so brilliantly
The Signal revealed it seems! A guide’s no longer what I need…”
The Captain:
It’s hard to define—hard to believe
Now that the Signal is shared in-between
It’s in my makeup. It’s in my genes. The Signal’s meant for me, singularly!
I’ll chase the Signal for eternity!
Every molecule compelling me at high velocity
My framework, redefined. My form, renewed
I’ve found the basis of the Human Molecule…
The Formulator:
“We are now both infected by the sound, won’t you come around?”

Contact!
03:12
|
|||
The Formulons:
Ridin’ around—sinister wantings. Space stretches on without end
Looking for entertainment—port bow! A foreign body on the way
Hyperdrive—ready to fly! Ensuring bedlam at a mighty high price tonight!
Go till sundown sowing our seed
We raid and rape our way through the galaxy
Making contact with another life form!
That’s how business goes…
We’ll hone in on a sure win and make a nice coat out of his skin
Rev the jets—make’em scream loud. Flip the switch—it’s time to go all out!
Now, get out the warp gun! Prime your fire ‘cause it’s gonna be fun!
It’s the time—down the line—get’em in your sights
Over ‘fore it’s begun—this is something you can’t outrun!
Last will and testament read loud—no longer searching for that sound
Death’s drawing near—got the all clear—fire the lasers
Watch as the continuum comes crumbling down!
The nether portal opens wide
All of your praying will not assist you on the other side
Gravitational pull from the tunnel to Dimension Y
Inescapable, one hell of a final ride!
The Captain:
“Lost in time. Lost in space. Pulled through a vacuum connecting the planes.
As I desynchronize from flowing clockwise in Dimension Y!”
The Formulons:
We’re cruising into the horizon. Gonna live it up on Titan
Party like it’s going out of style. Gonna be here for a while…
Now, bring out the champagne—raise your glass as he’s dyin’ in pain!
Narrator:
“Look ahead in the void—incoming asteroid!
Prepare to be destroyed; this is something you can’t avoid!”

Dimension Y
04:25
|
|||
The Captain:
Lean back and let me start to interrogate
Trapped inside this neon whirlpool—a vibrant place
Identify the motif conceit. Analyze the stimulus drive
Ask the question—why?
Every refrain a link in the chain that I’ve contrived
In search of a sound that cannot be found—is it all a lie?
Spent so long inside this rotation. Unbalancing, I must try to realign
So, I ask the question—why?
Why can’t I leave this behind?
It’s so far away, but something deep inside calls to me—whatever that means
No matter how hard I try I won’t be satisfied!
What do I seek to find? When will terminus supersede the climb?
Where will my traversal suspend? How will my transmission end?
Trapped inside an endless storm—rotating eights—electric outpour!
I need another time—another space—transfiguration of my phase

The Outer Limit
05:23
|
|||
The Captain:
Expelled from Dimension Y. Umbral depths on the other side
Null zone—confined. A formulated demise
Reaching the outer limit of all life
Unholy creatures dancing at the edge of my sight
Contorting figures spawned from the well of infinite night
They’re dragging me past the edge of reality
Holding fast until the breach has begun
Sundering of the space-time continuum
Slowly inching toward a dark matter universe eager to absorb
The Captain passes through the membrane of the outer limit
White-washed scenes stretching out into infinity
Lord, I do believe this is reminiscent of a dream
In a flash it came simultaneously—perhaps I had mistaken what I'd seen?
I decided that it was the gleam…
Maybe it wasn't at all what it seemed?
Ceaseless I will roam in this monochrome sublime
All along trying to find the Signal's true mind…

Arecibo
13:10
|
|||
The Captain:
Each and every time I’d found my way—mistaken, misdirected—off course and led astray
(It hides remote—it slowly slips away)
Repeating, endless white world. Sterility displayed
Over and over on replay—the coda far away
Preparing a transmission—a signal sent in vain
Misread the signs—a warning or way out of this place?
Can altering time lead me to what I desire?
I’m crying out—falling backwards through space-time!
I’ll send out a Signal! (It’s heard throughout space)
The message is simple… My Arecibo!
The Formulator:
“Where is he? I can no longer hear…
Where is he? The Signal’s left me!”
The Captain:
Into the fray—into the endless white!
Have I stumbled further from what I’m seeking?
A signal was all that I’d need, or so I thought when I still believed in
The purpose that was guiding me
I’ll travel far and wide—endlessly through the white!
Sending Signals. Through space-time they’ll hear my cry—my Arecibo!
Drifting off into space—gotta say—feeling fine
It’s getting cold, but I know that one day I will find a better life
A better way, another chance, another time! I know that I’ll find…
I’ll send a Signal through space-time. The universe will hear my cry!
Spacelog.0245:
“It’s been a while—it’s been a time—it’s been a God damn ride.
Wanting and waiting, for so long I’ve been praying for the day that I’d find what I seek
It escaped me. This can’t be the end. No, I won’t let it be!
The Signal I heard is just the first of many!
Listen to me. Hear what I have to say, intently.
Someone, please listen to me!
I’m signing off… Goodbye…”
